Rescue and relief operations are in full progress in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand where a glacier burst, led to massive flood and caused large-scale devastation. The glacier burst triggered massive flooding of Dhauliganga river near Rishiganga Power Project at Raini village in Tapovan area of the district yesterday.Eight bodies have been recovered so far from disaster-hit Raini, Biraji, Alakapuri and Chchinaka villages of Chamoli district. State Disaster Management Authority in Dehradun said, 25 people have been rescued so far whereas 152 people are reported to be still missing. They are mostly workers of hydro power projects.
13.2 MW Rishiganga hydropower project near Joshimath has washed away while 520 MW NTPC hydro project on the Dhauliganga River was partially damaged and at least five bridges were impacted by the surge of water that was unleashed, cutting access to few villages in the area. Teams of NDRF, SDRF, SSB, ITBP, and Defense personnel are actively participating in the rescue operations.
Director General of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) S N Pradhan said-
"Rescue operations are underway on a war footing in the disaster-affected areas. District Magistrate Swati Bhadaurya told that 2 people found safe at mid-night in a disaster-affected area out of 154 missing people. 13 villages have been cut off following the bridges swept away where about 350 families are residing. She told that grocery packets will be airdropped in the villages through helicopters. Medical teams are also deployed in the area."

National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) met (7 February) in New Delhi to review the situation arising out of the natural disaster in Uttarakhand caused by glacial burst. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba.
The glacial burst led to the rising of water levels in the river Rishiganga, which washed away the Rishiganga small hydro project of 13.2 Mega Watt. The flash flood also affected the downstream hydro project of NTPC at Tapovan on the river Dhauliganga, which is a tributary of the river Alaknanda. The Cabinet Secretary directed the concerned agencies to work in close co-ordination and extend all requisite assistance to the State administration.
